AUSTIN (Jan. 15, 2024) –The Austin Spurs (5-3) were defeated by the Mexico City Capitanes (6-2), 122-116 on Monday evening at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
Paul Watson Jr. led Austin with a season-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. Justin Kier followed with a season-high 19 points. Kaleb Johnson and Sir’Jabari Rice added 15 points for the Spurs.
Mexico City took an early lead in the opening period to finish ahead, 31-19. The momentum carried over into the second frame as they outscored the Spurs to lead at the end of the first half, 74-53. Austin found their rhythm in the third quarter as Erik Stevenson notched 10 points in the period alone that closed the gap by 12, 90-82. The final frame featured three ties and two lead changes. Austin was up by five with 3:36 remaining in the game credited to a Sir’Jabari Rice three, but the Capitanes regained the lead and sealed it with free throws.
Iverson Molinar and Justin Wright-Foreman led Mexico City with 28 points. Ethan Thompson followed with 24 points while Kenneth Faried notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
